Why the first ten seconds decide the next ten minutes

What happens in your child's brain the moment you raise your voice — and what to do instead.

Reel-shaped sample clip · 4 min in the finished version. Captions and the full transcript sit below.

Most parenting standoffs are decided in the first ten seconds, before anyone has said anything useful. By the time you get to your reasons, the outcome is already set.

Your child is reading your face, your height and your volume — not your argument. A parent standing over a child at full volume is asking them to negotiate while their body is telling them to defend itself.

So change the three things you actually control. Get down to their eye level. Drop your volume below theirs. Say one short thing, then stop talking.

It feels far too simple to matter. Do it at tonight's worst transition and watch how much shorter the whole thing is.

Hi, I'm Ray from Budo Martial Arts.

On the mat we never correct a nervous student by getting louder. We get quieter, and we get lower — down on one knee, at their eye level.

Watch what that does. The shoulders come down, the eyes come up, and now they can actually hear the correction.

Try it tonight at whichever moment usually goes worst in your house, and see what changes in the first ten seconds.
